If you are in the market for patio furniture you are no doubt interested in the materials used in manufacturing the furniture you wish to purchase. The decisions regarding what material is right for you are going to be tied to a variety of factors.
You might be looking for something relatively cheap and easy to transport and in order to cater to this you will look at a range of plastic furniture.
However, plastic furniture (and metal furniture for that matter) has a tendency to stain and require a fair bit of maintenance in order to properly care for the furniture in the longer term. Metal (in particular) has the ability to corrode if the exterior pain starts to wear.
Wood is a good option as it is attractive and (if treated correctly) quite durable. However, not all woods are created equal in this regard. Teak patio furniture is also a lot easier to maintain than furniture made with other woods. Many other woods do not contain natural oils that have the capacity to protect the furniture. Patio furniture made out of oak will require more oiling and maintenance than that made of teak.
Although you should still oil teak – you will not need to oil it as much as oak to maintain its condition. In fact, you will be more inclined to oil teak depending on how you would like it to look rather than preserving its integrity. Teak is less likely to rot due to moisture damage and this is why it is such a popular ship building wood to this day.
Teak might not be the best option for your patio furniture however. It really depends on the aesthetic appeal of your garden or patio and the underlying them of which you have designed the garden around. If you have spent time cultivating a rather modern looking garden then a stainless steel garden setting may be the right option.
Aluminum is a light weight metal that is fairly resistant to corrosion if treated correctly. If you prefer a more natural feeling patio setting then wood is likely to be the best option. Plastic can be useful in the right setting – although as a person opinion – but it is a little cheaper looking.
It all depends on what you are willing to spend and the look you are going for in regards to selecting the right patio furniture. The materials that are used in the manufacture of the furniture are likely to be as important as the aesthetic appeal attributed to the furniture however. This point should not be disregarded when in the market for such furniture.
